Practice notes (J&C)
The largest similar group in Class 1, divided by type of chemical into twenty parts (inorganic acids, inorganic bases, metal oxides, inorganic salts, organic acids, organic salts, hydrocarbons, alcohols, ethers, phenols, amines, ketones, aldehydes, esters, proteinaceous macromolecules, carbohydrates, industrial enzymes, surfactants, hydrogen peroxide, and single goods); goods in the different parts are not similar to one another (group note). When filing in this group, a chemical company should tick each part according to the part to which its product belongs; one part does not cover the others (practical tip).
There are many cross-group cross-references: vulcanising agents in Part (4) are similar to Part (11) of 0104 and Part (2) of 0108; catechu and tannin in Part (5) are similar to 0114; industrial enzymes in Part (17) are similar to catalysts in Part (19) of 0104 and biochemical catalysts in 0106; silica gel in Part (20) is similar to Part (17) of 0104.
Changes in 2026: lithium iron phosphate and lithium cobaltate were added to Part (4) (of note to lithium-battery materials companies), and terpene hydrocarbons were added to Part (7); geraniol, artificial musk ketone, coconut aldehyde and ethyl benzoate, formerly in 0305, were moved into Parts (8), (12), (13) and (14) respectively, each part gaining a note cross-searching with 0305 in the 12th and earlier editions; “animal protein (raw material)” was deleted from Part (15).
