The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) issued Information Notice No. 41/2026 (MADRID/2026/41) on 23 September: the Government of Canada has notified the WIPO Director General of a declaration modifying the amounts of the individual fee payable in respect of Canada under Article 8(7) of the Madrid Protocol. The new amounts apply as from 1 January 2027: for an international application or subsequent designation designating Canada, 291 Swiss francs for one class of goods or services instead of 282, and 88 Swiss francs for each additional class instead of 86; for renewal, 353 Swiss francs for one class instead of 342, and 110 Swiss francs for each additional class instead of 107, the current amounts remaining payable until 31 December 2026.
The notice sets out when the new amounts are payable: where Canada is designated in an international application received by the Office of origin on or after 1 January 2027; where it is the subject of a subsequent designation received by the Office of the holder's Contracting Party, or filed directly with the International Bureau, on or after that date; or where it has been designated in an international registration renewed on or after that date. At the time of writing, WIPO's summary page of individual fees still shows the current amounts and was last updated on 23 August 2026; the new amounts rest on the text of the notice, and the fee calculator and summary page are expected to follow.
The increase is modest, but it is a direct fee change for every international application, subsequent designation and renewal that designates Canada, and the applicable amount depends on the date the Office of origin receives the international application or the renewal is processed, not on the date the applicant instructs its representative. Since Canada joined the Madrid Protocol in 2019 its individual fee has been adjusted several times in line with exchange rates and its domestic fees, and notices of this kind are usually published months in advance, leaving a window to adjust budgets and filing timetables. J&C recommends that applicants planning to designate Canada have their international application received by the Office of origin, file their subsequent designation or complete their renewal by 31 December 2026 to pay current amounts; that budgets and quotes spanning the year change use the new amounts; that Canadian designations falling due for renewal in 2027, including renewals paid within the grace period, show the new amounts in renewal reminders; and that the WIPO notice text and the updated fee calculator, not the unsynchronised summary page, be the reference.
