09-10-2015: "Thongs" is indefinite and overly broad when it appears alone in an identification or in an identification for a wide variety of clothing. However, "thongs" is acceptable to identify clothing or footwear in Class 25 when included in a list of underwear, beachwear, or footwear. 08-25-2016: Under USPTO policy, "thongs" is indefinite and overbroad regardless of whether the term is used alone, in a list of a wide variety of clothing, or in a list limited to underwear, beachwear, or footwear. USPTO no longer accepts the term "thongs" in a list of underwear, beachwear, or footwear. The common name of the goods must be specified, e.g., thong footwear, in Class 25.
