On 07-10-2014, this Note was added to make clear the distinction between coatings in Class 2 and Class 19. A coating is a liquid spread on surfaces that dries to form a thin layer, often of color, and is justified in Class 2 based on the Class Heading, 'Paints, varnishes, lacquers.' However, coatings that are not in Class 2 are not in the nature of liquids that dry to a thin layer. Rather, they are coatings that lay down a substantial layer that amounts to application of a building material, and are therefore, justified in Class 19 based on the Class Heading, 'Building materials (non-metallic)' and the Alphabetical List entry, 'coatings [building materials]' in Class 19.
